IDB strengthens the resilience of small rural producers in Mexico
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved an 8 million dollars investment grant to strengthen climate resilience and productivity among small-scale rural producers in Mexico. The main resource of this initiative will be used to support partial loan guarantees through the Trusts Established in Relation to Agriculture (FIRA). This financial mechanism aims to reduce the risk profile of small-scale producers by facilitating their access to private financing for the adoption of sustainable technologies.
The intervention focuses on promoting regenerative agriculture and improving climate risk management on farms. With FIRA’s guarantee scheme, farmers will be able to obtain loans on better terms to invest in efficient irrigation infrastructure, soil conservation, and crop diversification. These measures are critical to mitigating the vulnerability of the Mexican agricultural sector to droughts and other extreme weather events.
In addition to the guarantee component, the program includes technical assistance to help producers meet sustainability standards, enabling them to integrate into high value-added supply chains. The collaboration between the IDB and FIRA strengthens the green finance market in Mexico, using non-reimbursable funds to mobilize capital towards projects with a positive environmental and social impact in rural areas.
